Updated: Dec 18, 2023

Sara Kim, PharmD graduated from the University of California, San Francisco in 2023. In 2023, she joined the University of the Pacific Fellowship in Industry Program partnered with Genentech in the functional area Clinical Pharmacology. We caught up with Sara to gain her insight on her current role in Genentech and to provide insight to prospective PharmD students pursuing a fellowship route into industry.

How has your fellowship been so far?

"I feel very supported knowing that there are various resources available for me to use for my own learning makes me feel supported. Ultimately, the fellowship requires self-motivation and initiation, which is part of the professional development process."

What made you decide to pursue a fellowship route?

"It provides the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge required as a clinical pharmacologist that may not be necessarily covered during pharmacy school."

What made you decide to pursue your functional area? Did you apply to other functional areas during the fellowship application process?

"Since I was an undergraduate, I have always been curious how molecules are discovered and translated into the first doses for humans."

Have you considered applying into an entry level position (rather than a fellowship route)? Why or Why not?

"Maybe, but ultimately I was accepted into my current role in the fellowship path."

What advice do you have for PharmD students seeking to pursue a fellowship?

"Do what you enjoy and network!"

What advice do you have for students seeking a fellowship opportunity but say that they don't have experience/ internship/ rotations in the functional area/ etc...?

"It is just as important to demonstrate your interest and who you are as a colleague/team member."
